E3 2018 Predictions – Bethesda

With E3 just around the corner, it is once again time for the Player 2 crew to get their crystal balls out of the attic and make some wildly inaccurate predictions as to what will appear at the world’s biggest games show. It is now Bethesda’s turn, can they recover from a somewhat disappointing 2017 show?

E3 2018 Predictions – Bethesda

Stephen del Prado

Safe Bet

“We have no news on Elder Scrolls 6.” – Todd Howard. However, they will reveal details behind the recently leaked Prey DLC. Rage 2 will take centre stage here for sure, with some extensive gameplay demos.

Fairly Likely

More ESO content to deflect from ES6 questions and something DOOM related, whether it be a sequel or a standalone expansion package in the same vein as Wolfenstein: The Old Blood.

Wishful Thinking

A new Fallout title from Obsidian to wash the taste of Fallout 4 out of my mouth.

Safe Bet

Some new form of Skyrim. I mean, what isn’t it out on these days? 3DS? Yeah, gimme Skyrim on the 3DS. On a more serious note though, it’s already known that we’re gonna get some juicy info regarding the company’s biggest money makers- Elder Scrolls, Doom and Fallout, and I’m really excited to see what they are.

Fairly Likely

With Elder Scrolls Online going gangbusters I think it’s pretty likely that another expansion for that will be announced. It’d also be really cool to see some more Switch ports of their existing games library, because who can get enough of that Switch love?

Wishful Thinking

I know Elder Scrolls 6 isn’t going to be announced. But that doesn’t make me want it any less.

Sure Thing

Well, now that Bethesda has gone and rolled out the debut of Rage 2, and the fact that they’ve said it’ll be at E3, there’s no surer thing at the Bethesda conference than that. Expect a gameplay blowout, more open-world madness and more craziness than your mind can withstand. As a Borderlands fan who is desperately waiting for Borderlands 3, Rage 2 seems to be ticking all the right boxes with its tone. Now just give me a good game to go with it.

Fairly Likely

ID is pretty busy again these days, what with DOOM, DOOM VFR, and now a hand in the development of Rage 2, but surely, surely they’re returning to the DOOM well while they’re in a rich vein of form. DOOM is already about 2 years old, so the team have had more than enough time to get something to the point that it’s ready for debut. The only remaining question is… is it DOOM or would they dare tackle a new IP? Quake, Rage and Wolfenstein are all spoken for these days, so we’re quickly down to just two options.

Wishful Thinking

One more year. Just one more. Bethesda knows we’re salivating, but after some quite reasonable critiques that were made about Fallout 4, they probably know all too well, that the ante has been upped significantly. The team is undoubtedly head down, bum up, working on the new Elders Scrolls game, but my belief is that we have one more year to wait before we see it.

Safe

Rage is fleshed out further from the reveals coming in at the moment and is shown to be a shared world shooter or in the least akin to Borderlands where party jump in and out mechanics are available. More content for Elder Scrolls Online is announced.

Fairly Likely

Bethesda has said they aren’t bringing a new ‘Elder Scrolls’ title to this E3 which makes me wonder what their heavy hitter is. I think they’ll bring something akin to a Skyrim 2 – it’s a bigger name than elder scrolls by far and lets them be all ‘we tricked you!’ and I refuse to be tricked. Skyrim 2. It’s coming.

Wishful thinking

Wolfenstein VR. I don’t even have a VR set up but killing nazis was so damn cathartic in that game that I think a VR version would be even better and they’ve been doing stuff with VR recently so it could happen.

Todd Howard rides in on a dragon that sets the first 5 rows on fire – The screens in the background roar into life with the flames when BAM… The Elder Scrolls 6 flashes up on the screen.

Royce Wilson

Safe Bet

Rage 2 is a given, and I am not going to be even remotely surprised if we see yet another Elder Scrolls offering, since they’re awfully keen on the franchise for some reason. Quake Champions is supposed to get a release this year as well, despite a near-total lack of buzz or excitement around the title that I’ve noticed, so maybe there’ll be something to amp the title up this year.

Fairly Likely

It’s also been a while since Bethesda launched a new IP so with any luck there’ll be something interesting and unexpected announced there. I guess we won’t know for sure until their conference.

 Wishful Thinking

I’m hoping for Fallout 5 (bonus points if Obsidian are involved) and possibly Prey 2, although quite how that would work given the ending to the original is anyone’s guess.  I would also be extremely happy if it turned out Bethesda had acquired the licence to Westworld and were making an open-world RPG based on that setting, too.

Safe Bet

After the Walmart Canada leaks dropped the potential existence of Rage 2, Bethesda decided to go all in and confirm it, following with a trailer not long after.  Judging by the response I would guess Bethesda were probably keeping it for E3 but since the cat is out of the bag I am sure we will see more of the game and when we can expect a release.

Fairly Likely

We know that they have been working on a brand new IP over at Bethesda under the name of Starfield.  This could be the final name for the game or just a code name.  While we may not know much about this game I would not be surprised if they announce it at E3 for a release later in the year, just like they did with Fallout 4.

Wishful Thinking

Some info about the next Elder Scrolls game.  Having ported Skyrim to almost every platform there is, now would be a good time to drop some info about next entry in the series rather than an announcement that Skyrim is now being ported to the Vita.

E3 2018 Predictions - Bethesda

Stevie McDonald

Safe Bet

Rage 2 has been confirmed and will likely be a cornerstone of Bethesda’s conference. I must confess, I never played the first game, but knowing the sequel will be a collaborative effort between id Software (naturally) and Avalanche Studios piques my interest majorly.

Fairly Likely

This may be a little optimistic for ‘Fairly Likely’, but it’s not totally fanciful: more info on Elder Scrolls 6. It’s been a good long while since Skyrim was released and most are more than ready to get back to Tamriel – maybe this will be the year a release date is confirmed?

Wishful Thinking

I’m not sure which is more pie in the sky: an announcement of Doom 2 or an announcement of Doom 2 that isn’t accompanied by blood, gore and that one weird guy in the audience getting far too excited.

E3 2018 Predictions - Bethesda

Matt Hewson

Safe Bet

Well, I am going to say something Fallout related, I am cheating here and have seen the teasing that Bethesda is doing. My head says it is Fallout Switch but my heart says something brand new. How cool would a Switch Fallout game in the style of the Original titles be? Isometric, turn-based, black humour. Sign me up.

Fairly Likely

I am almost certain there will be some sort of Doom announcement. Doom suprised me as I gave it almost no chance of being good, I was very very wrong. Heavy Metal, dead demons and twitch gameplay, what is not exciting about that? So I think it is about time for something more, maybe a sequel but more likely some DLC. Just don’t bother with the MP this time ID (except a Horde mode… Horde in Doom would be RAD)

Wishful Thinking

One of the greatest heroes of the 90’s makes his long-awaited return. He is geared up, helmeted and ready to roll. The phaser gun is primed and the pogo stick oiled and ready to go. Commander Keen is in the house and is ready to take on the latest alien invasion
