Conscript | Hype Check
With Team 17’s Conscript now only a few days away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Conscript.

If you’ve not seen Conscript before, please pause reading this article, check out a trailer and come back, because what Jordan Mochi and Catchweight Studio are developing is is shaping up to be one of the surprise indie hits of the year in my humble opinion. Mixing the horrors of World War I with the horrors of classic Resident Evil shouldn’t appeal, but the game has been so meticulously designed from my experiences hands-on with the game that I cannot help but be extremely excited. Horror fans, you’ve got a gem on the way

So, I’m not really into survival horror as a genre – there’s enough in the world which gives me existential dread, so experiencing those feelings in video game form is not really how I want to spend my precious gaming time. However, I can appreciate the vibe the team at Catchweight are aiming for here, and I’m sure for those into it, it’ll be a frightening experience, and I hope it’s a success! It’s just one that I can’t really see myself getting into.

I first saw Conscript at Pax a few years ago. I remember it even won the showcase one year. It seems like such a natural pairing combining the horrors of war with survival horror that it’s amazing that it hasn’t been done before. It’s like the invention of the Tim tam. Now it’s been invented, we’ll wonder how we ever did without it.
I’ve played the demo myself twice at different stages of the games creation. The first time I managed to get lost and became stuck. The second time I actually got to the part where the charge happened. It was very tense and as I had been playing a while, I decided to stop soon after. I have no qualms about going back and playing again as I very much enjoy survival horror and history. Even more astounding is the fact that Conscript was mostly made by one person so it’s a hell of an achievement!
