PS5 Pro - The Game Assessments - Part 3

For anyone who might be considering dropping the $1199 AUD required to pick up a PS5, you’re going to want to know that the purchase is justified. Well for all that there are numerous technical upgrades present with the console, you also need the software to support those additions. I’ve been checking out 20 different PS5 titles, all now with Pro support, to share the changes that I’ve noticed and hopefully help you to decide whether the console upgrade is worth it. Here’s today’s line-up of titles

The Last Of Us Part II Remastered

Wheeeew, after being a bit underwhelmed by the upgrades seen in The Last Of Us Part I, I was far more impressed by what I saw in Part II. Now this could in part be due to the fact that Part II was a PS5 game masquerading as a PS4 game with its 2020 release, but the way the game looks and feels to play with the PS5 Pro update is fantastic. The Pro mode that blends both the 4K visuals with the 60FPS perks from Fidelity and Performance modes does some extraordinary things for the playing experience, and I suddenly feel ready for another full replay.

God Of War Ragnarok

The Pro Mode of God Of War Ragnarok makes an already gorgeous title look even better. I was shocked by just how much sharper the game looked, and considering how detailed the game already was, that says a great deal. Pro Mode, just like what we’ve seen from other PlayStation exclusives has also encompassed the performance upgrades as well, with the game looking gorgeous while still running at 60FPS. Slicing through Draugr has never looked and felt better to see and experience.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is already an exceptional looking game, but I felt a bit disappointed by the PS5 Pro updates presented to players with this new patch. There are 4K upgrades in part, and the raytraced lighting looks absolutely phenomenal, but overall, the upgrade has seen the game’s base resolution lift from 1800p to 2160p while Performance Mode lifts the game from 1200p to 1800p at 60FPS. It’s hard to justify the Fidelity mode if it’s not going the full distance, while the jump in resolution for Performance Mode is much smaller than other games that still possess the separate modes. I don’t think anyone will be unhappy with the playing/visual experience, but it feels like Survivor’s PS5 updates represent a missed opportunity to go further.

Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy adds two new modes with its PS5 Pro update. HDR Performance cracks open the can of ultra-high framrates and is absolutely the ultimate playing experience, but as someone with long-term memories of the Harry Potter books, and then the way they were realised in cinema, Hogwarts Legacy’s “Fidelity With Raytracing” mode looks phenomenal. One step into the Great Hall and players will be blown away by how stunning the space looks, going broader, especially around the castle, and everywhere you look will leave your jaw agape. A stunning upgrade, and its likely to cause players the need to make a difficult decision about their playing preference.
