Games to Watch 2025 - Sports/Driving

It is that time of year when we look ahead to see what is coming. With that in mind, Matt has taken a look at the upcoming slate to see which games from each genre deserve to be watched closely. The reasons to watch these games may be varied and these lists are by no means comprehensive, but all games mentioned at least deserve to be kept in your mind as they head towards release.

Now we take a look at the upcoming sports and driving games. It is important to note that we are skipping over the yearly franchises like NBA 2K and EA FC.

Wreckfest 2

The original Wreckfest was an early access game built by the developers of Flatout 1&2 (you know, the good ones.) It went on to become something of a cult hit, getting releases on consoles and earning quite a large player base. It was built around the concept of “everyman” racing, the type of events enthusiasts around the world take part in for little to no reward and it had a strong sense of fun to go along with its solid driving model.

It is therefore no surprise that a sequel is coming and promises to be bigger and better. There will be more cars, events, customisation, and crashes—everything a rev head needs for a good time. What excited me the most was the promise of a more detailed campaign mode, which was probably the last game’s only real weak point. I can see this one landing mid-year.

Skate

The long-awaited followup to EA’s Skate franchise is almost here and it is promising the world for skaters everywhere. Simply titled Skate, this entry is taking the game online and free-to-play and it arrives with a massive city for skateboarders from all around the world to treat as their own personal playground.

This is one franchise I can see working with a free-to-play model, after all so much of the skate culture is about looks and style, but that will obviously depend on how EA implements things like microtransactions and season passes into the mix. If they get it right, I have no doubt this will be a hit. If they get it wrong however… well it could be another F2P crash in the making. Skate is hitting early access in the first half of the year.

The Run: Got Next

Another of EA’s long-forgotten sport franchises is coming back… sort of. The Run: Got Next is a 3v3 basketball game coming from a group of devs who worked on the very cool NBA Street franchise back in the day. It looks to take a lot of inspiration from the NBA Street games and looks to be the sort of arcade title we just don’t see anymore.

The Run will be multiplayer only it seems, with online matches that can be played as a single player or a part of a team. There are also roguelike elements to the game which will be interesting to see how they play into a multiplayer experience. There are some odd things going on with this one and it is clear the devs want to do something different to what has come before so it certainly makes it a game to watch. This one could drop anytime, but I would guess that the quiet period of June/July would be ideal.

Sonic Racing: Crossworlds

For everyone who doesn’t own a Nintendo system, the choice of kart racers is pretty slim. Thankfully though a certain blue hedgehog has stepped into the void a few times to give players a solid karting experience on Xboxes, Playstations and PCs. Well, Sonic is looking to do so again and considering it has been a long time since we had a new Mario Kart game, it could even become the premier Kart racing title on any system.

We don’t know much about Sonic Racing: Crossworlds as of yet. There was an all-too-brief announcement trailer at the Video Game Awards and that’s it. But expect it to include all the classic genre staples like powerslides, weapons and crazy tracks. The previous Sonic Racing games have all been solid so there is a good chance that Crossworlds will be too. Expect this one late in the year and it could even slip in to 2026

Skate Story

The more I see of Skate Story, the more I am intrigued by what the final game will be. The basic premise is something of a cross between Dante’s Inferno and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. Players take control of a skater who must shred the underworld, kill demons and eventually take down Lucifer himself. It is a bonkers concept that I am absolutely here for.

Perhaps the coolest part is the look of the game. It features such a striking style that it is hard to look away. The gameplay also looks super fluid and promises to get fans of skating games sucked in with a tight trick system. In all Skate Story may be the strangest extreme sports title I have ever seen but it is also one of the most intriguing. I expect this one to be the star in Devolver’s crazy direct mid-year.
