A Massive Pile of Updates Coming to a Starfield Near You

Starfield. Rarely has a game seemingly split opinions as thoroughly. Some, like our very own Jess Zammit, loved the space RPG, while others felt it was a massive step back for Bethesda. So while it may not have had the most consistent reception, it has certainly generated plenty of discussion since it came out in 2023.  One thing can’t be denied, though, and that is that Bethesda has continued to support the game, making improvements, adding DLC and fixing issues since the launch. That support is continuing in 2026 with not one, but two DLC additions along with a release that everyone saw coming.

The first DLC pack is called Free Lanes, and as its name suggests, it arrives without cost. This update adds a host of new goodies, including a new ground vehicle, locations, crafting options and dungeons. It also includes a host of community-requested improvements and features, including the ability to free-fly between planets. You can even set your ship on autopilot, get out of the captain’s chair and go annoy your crew while the ship merrily heads towards your desired location.

The second DLC is a premium DLC (which Premium Edition owners will receive at no cost) that focuses on a news story of invaders showing up in the galaxy to cause trouble for all the humans kicking about. A full new questline along with enemies, locations and weapons are on offer here and it promises to be a nice slice of story content for players that are looking for more.

The final announcement is the one we all expected, but it took way longer to arrive than we thought, and that is Starfield is getting a PS5 release.  On the same day as the two new DLC packs arrive, April 8 to be precise, Starfield will hit Sony’s console for the first time. It will also include PS5 Pro enhancements for those of us with the upgraded model, along with other enhancements like DualSense support. I know this is hardly a surprise, but I am of the opinion that it is nice to see.

If you want to see the full list of additions coming in the DLC, you can check the full press blast below, in the meantime, excuse me while I go and resintall the game, I think it is about time I gave it another go.

Free Lanes Update & Terran Armada Story DLC

Terran Armada introduces a new questline across the Settled Systems, with new characters, locations, enemies, quests, systems, and rewards. Players get the chance to shape the future of humanity in space as they combat the incursions of the Terran Armada’s robotic forces in this brand new story DLC.

Free Lanes is a free update that adds significant new features and systems designed to deepen the core Starfield experience for both new and returning players, most significantly opening up interplanetary travel within systems. With this update, players can use cruise mode to travel from planet to planet within a star system, where they’ll experience frequent encounters and activities and spend some quality time on their ship with their crew.

Additional features coming with the update include:

  • New locations – A number of new Encounters, POIs, Dungeons, notable increase in variety for players to discover
  • X-Tech – A new resource used to upgrade weapons, ship modules, and more
  • Enemy modifiers – New enemy tiers with performance modifiers, such as extra shielding, more frequent attacks, or elemental damage
  • Moon Jumper – New land vehicle
  • Outpost improvements – Cross-outpost storage & Milliewhale pet
  • New crew – Muria and the mini-bot
  • Starborn Improvement – Ability to bring a limited number of items through the Unity to a NG+

The Free Lanes update comes free for all players. All existing Premium Edition owners on Xbox and Steam will receive the Terran Armada DLC at no additional cost.
