Sonic’s Birthday Bash To Support Cancer Research

Sonic's Birthday Bash To Support Cancer Research

Ever wanted to attend a birthday party for a hedgehog? Because on Friday, June 23rd, you could get your wish. To celebrate the launch of Sonic Origins Plus (as well as Sonic the Hedgehog’s 32nd birthday), Five Star Games, in collaboration with AusSpeedruns, has announced a new speedrunning competition: The Sonic State of Origins Plus clash. See Australia’s best Sonic the Hedgehog speedrunners battle it out at Fortress Sydney to see which team takes home the shield. Finally, a State of Origin event where NSW might actually win.

Represented by Knuckles, the Queensland team (Stylonide, The8bitbeast and captain Raikou) will don their red jerseys and attempt to outpace the New South Wales team in blue (3Pills, LaceyStripes and captain Werster). NSW will be represented by Sonic himself, and it’s bad form to beat the birthday boy at his own game so take note Queensland!

All proceeds from the event will be going to Game on Cancer, the gaming initiative of Aussie charity, Cure Cancer.

Shane Bailey, Head of Gaming & Streaming at Cure Cancer, says: “We’re honoured to be partnered with AusSpeedruns as their charity of choice, and to see a new speedrunning competition come to Australia – from the original speedster himself, no less – is simply wonderful”

The momentous birthday clash will be simulcast across the /AusSpeedruns channel on Twitch so that fans can tune in from wherever they are in the world. If you’d like to attend in person however, you’ll be privy to a spectacular, world-class speedrunning event at Fortress Sydney’s new state-of-the-art competition arena. You will also be treated to cake (because what’s a birthday without cake?) and the opportunity to meet the birthday boy himself.

Tickets for the event are $10 and available at Eventbrite until sold out.
