Pacific Drive | Hype Check
With Pacific Drive now only a few weeks away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Pacific Drive.a

I had no interest in Pacific drive and knew nothing about it until I saw an article saying that it was one of the most positively reviewed games on steam despite not being released yet. Got a bit of a “huh, neat” reaction out of me. It was only when talking to Ken and Tim on the Pixelcast that I realised that this game is probably right up my alley. I like games that take a mundane thing and make it slightly off type of horror. It’s not jump scares, it’s not in your face, it’s just a nice settling unease held together by a narrative. Perfect. It’s part of what Silent hill 2 did so well and I’m hoping Pacific Drives manages to do their own version of it well. I don’t care about being able to customise the car, the less I fiddle with that the better. I would probably break it if I try.

So, I knew nothing about this game until I watched the trailer in preparation for writing this paragraph, and it looks kinda great? It looks like the kind of weird that I find really intriguing. I’m not sure that it’ll hold my attention if the gameplay is going to be overly focused on car customisation, but the world exploration and general weird science vibes are really pulling me in. My hype score is low for now because I’m still learning about it, and I suspect a big chunk of it won’t be for me. But I think there could be something cool here.

One of my favourite games, Project Zomboid has one of my favourite playstyles; the Nomad playthrough. You grab an RV and travel the zombie infested cities and live as best you can from your van. You scrounge and sleep under the stars until you meet your final rest. It’s awesome. With my adoration for this playstyle, it’s no wonder that Pacific Drive is high on my list of ‘must haves’ for the year. A weird American landscape and just you and your car to explore it with, and it changes over time with your garage acting as your one safe place? I have a need for this, pump it directly into my bloodstream.

The world of Pacific Drive looks cool to me, and what the team are claiming to be shooting for narratively clicks with me as well. The problem is though that many attempts at driving games have taught me that driving in first-person is just not something I can handle. Sorry Pacific Drive, it’s not you, it’s me, but you’ll be great to check out on YouTube after the fact!

I think unlike a lot of folks who are interested in Pacific Drive, I feel like I’m more into the idea of the driving about side of it, than the spooky weirdness. So far, the initial thoughts from others have still got me curious for something that’s not really down my alley – something the car side kind of helped spark, if only because it’s nice to have a driving game which isn’t about racing wildly about the place.
