World Of Goo 2 | Hype Check
With 2D Boy’s World Of Goo 2 now here, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about World Of Goo 2.

The return of World Of Goo was not something on my bingo card, but when Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards revealed the re-emergence of the franchise, I became quite keen to check World Of Goo 2 out. I even jumped back into the original, which has since been ported from Wii to the Netflix app on mobile platforms, and the puzzles hold up, let me assure you. I’m keen and ready to go, but not climbing over myself just yet. It’s been a long time to be dormant, hopefully, the team still has the chops.

The original was an absolute banger of a puzzle game that was the perfect 20-30 min experience in between real life jobs. I hope this one follows the same path because the world needs more of this sort of thing.

World of Goo might have been my first digital game purchase on PC, and also the first in a long line of digitally purchased games I never played, let alone finished. Such a break between drinks has me wondering what prompted the original developers to return to the well, but it’s hard to deny the importance of recognisable IP in the current media landscape. Definitely something I’d be happy to check out on a mobile device, but not the sort of thing I want to sit in front of a TV or monitor for – the state of my spine is not what it was in 2008!

I listed World of Goo 2 in my anticipated games of 2024 list, so it’s of little surprise that I’m looking forward to it. World of Goo holds a small but special place in my heart, as a part (perhaps the closing statement) of that original wave of indie games that really got the ball rolling. I’ve been replaying it on my phone through Netflix, and while it sucks that you can’t outright buy it, the remaster is pretty good and is mostly just let down by really needing a tablet-sized screen.
I am fully down for more bendy, physics-based bridge building with some creative twists (although hopefully on a device with a bigger screen this time). There’s still not much like this out there, and with it being so long between drinks, this one has a good chance to still feel incredibly fresh.
