Following a successful crowdfunding campaign for their first title – Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical – Aussie game developer Summerfall Studios have today launched a Kickstarter campaign for their next (darker) title.
Malys, the ‘hellish roguelike deckbuilder’ puts players in the shoes of Noah – a former priest and exorcist turned demon hunter. As the player progresses through this atmospheric story, they’ll join Noah in exorcising demons from the innocent and learning some lessons about the shades of grey of the world they’re operating in. The Kickstarter’s page boasts that you’ll ‘step into the feeling of an actual exorcism’, and the game is set to feature a ‘horrifying, reactive soundscape’ – so it seems like Summerfall aren’t pulling punches when it comes to the horror vibes.

Though Summerfall Studios are known for their narrative focus, it seems players who are more interested in the good old fashioned hardcore deckbuilding experience will be able to skip the story at will – so it seems like the studio are trying some new things this time around.
Liam Elser, Managing Director of Summerfall Studios says about the campaign’s launch – “Malys has been a totally new adventure for us, filled with the promise of dark dreams and tantalising terrors, and we can’t wait to share it with players. Doing this Kickstarter campaign will allow us to ensure Malys is that much stronger at launch, and build a community of people to help shape that launch!”

Those who back Malys during the campaign will be eligible to receive a number of rewards, like a collector’s edition of the game, access to the studio’s podcast, and various other goodies. For those who are loaded and also vengeful, you can even pay $5000 to name a demon in the game after your ex, which I’m sure would be a tempting and ultimately cathartic undertaking for many.
