Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition | Hype Check
With Nintendo’s Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition now only a few days away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition.

Oh man, I am so surprised that Nintendo decided to release this game after all these years. As an NES game that was made purely for the World Championships in 1990, the winners received a copy of the game that was used in the final section of the championships. Five people received a copy of this game. It’s one of the rarest NES games in the world and is worth nearly $25k right now. At one point, it reached 60k! It’s insane. So i just think it’s hilarious that they felt the need to turn it into a real game and release it almost just to screw over the resale price of the originals.

Some people are tired of zombies. Some of shooters. Me personally, I’m tired of nostalgia bait games. Nintendo does this best, with their drip feeding of content onto Nintendo Switch Online and getting people to pay for it. I’m not anti-Nintendo, I just think they rest on their laurels a bit because they were such a seminal part of people’s childhoods. Would someone who had never played any of these games before be interested in them? I mean, it’s cheap enough that they probably might, but I think it’s a hard sell anyway. Interestingly, it could be a really good gateway to speedrunning. It’s not for me.

Every so often, I think I might want to become a speedrunner. I watch a lot of Games Done Quick, and they’re always so encouraging – “anyone can become a speedrunner!” Honestly, knowing how terrible I actually am at games despite playing and making them for work, I’m not sure I believe them. But with the release of this collection, Nintendo seems to. This appeals to me as a way to dabble in speedrunning without having to make my own decisions about which games to try and play, and I sure do love anything that takes me away from decision paralysis. I can see a world in which I check this game out. It might be this one, who knows.

I really, really wish this was a proper modern incarnation of the competition concept Ninty ran in 1990. Instead, this is more a modern update to the NES Remix games. Now, that’s not a bad thing to see – as bringing the competitive multiplayer aspect to it is pretty neat, what with it allowing both local and remote play.
That latter thing is certainly what piqued my curiosity here – I just wish there were more games included to be challenged by.

I went from really not caring less for Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition to suddenly being all about this game thanks to the preview op that Nintendo invited me to last month. The blend of classics, broken down in a bunch of cool ways to make for a selection of exciting micro-games that push players of all levels of experience. I was right into it, and now cannot wait for the game’s release
