Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth | Hype Check

With Sega’s Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth now only a few weeks away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

Matt Hewson

Feed it to me, I need it now. I am a fully-fledged, 100% die-hard Yakuza fan boy and anything in this franchise is going to be high on my want list. Ichiban joining forces with the Dragon of Dojima himself is the stuff that fans have dreams about. The only concern I have is that the team can fix the overly grindy nature of Yakuza 7 and smooth out the progression so that players aren’t slamming into difficulty brick walls. If that happens I have no doubt this will be in my GOTY consideration for 2024.

Jess Zammit

I keep promising that one day I’m going to play a Yakuza game – and I do stand by it. But this probably won’t be the one. At least, not until I’ve jumped into some of the series’ earlier entries. The Yakuza series is truly one of the weirdest game franchises out there, and I respect the hell out of it for that. Well, mostly. Having seem some speedruns in recent months, I now have a whole lot of questions… and I’m pretty convinced that Yakuza has no interest in answering them. The moral of the story is, sorry Infinite Wealth – you probably won’t get a look in for a while.

Jason Hawkins

I’m excited this exists. I’m pretty far behind in the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, but I do love it dearly. I’m just a guy who really strives to complete the games he plays, and all these games are positively massive if you’re not mainlining the story. Will I play it? Yes, 100% absolutely some day. WIll that be at launch? God no. Still, it’s rad as hell that this series is getting the love it’s always deserved and is still maintaining a great level of quality, even with reduced time between releases.

Paul James

For those who are across my various ramblings about the MCU, you will know that I fell behind sometime around Avengers: Age Of Ultron, and as the mountain of movies began to pile up, my enthusiasm for beginning the ascent up said mountain declined substantially – despite my interest. Yakuza/Like A Dragon, and even the Judgment games, despite them being incredibly appealing to me (I learned this during the most recent Player 2 Marathon), have mounted up to such a level that unless 2024 is one of the driest years for games of all time (Cmon GTA, scare everyone away), I simply won’t be able to give the franchise a chance. I feel like I need that chronological story progression from game to game, and so without it, I’m simply not able to commit to Infinite Wealth – no matter how cool it looks!

Stephen Del Prado

I’m a dyed in the wool Yakuza fan and have played almost every entry in the series – of course I’m excited for this! As Sega and RGG Studios bring together the disparate story branches in this entry, I have a slight hesitation in regards to the promised length of Infinite Wealth, concerned that it will feel more like Infinite Playtime. While other Yakuza games tend to allow players to quickly get through the main storyline and flesh everything out in the numerous side stories, Infinite Wealth promising to be ‘the longest Yakuza yet!’ has me a bit trepidatious, but I’m happy to be proven wrong.

Oh boy does this look like the dumbest fun. I’m still only working my way through Kiwami but it is silly fun and I am here for it. It seems that they’ve somehow ramped the insanity up to 11 for this one. Means I need to finish Kiwami quick! And probably get a console that it can be played on. Might help.
