Open Roads | Hype Check

With Open Roads now only a few weeks away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Open Roads.

Open Roads isn’t rocking my world like Fullbright’s previous games, Gone Home and Tacoma. I don’t know if that’s the lack of Steve Gaynor (something I completely understand given the reports of his workplace antics), or just the direction that this game has gone down but I’m eager to be wrong, I’m just awaiting some kind of evidence to suggest I’m wrong. The plot summary of Open Roads isn’t floating my boat yet but hopefully some good press down the line can change my mind.

I have been waiting YEARS for this game, and it’s finally almost here!! I can’t wait! I love Fullbright’s games, I love a good narrative-focused title, and I also love Kaitlyn Dever – there is so much here for me to be excited about. Plus, a story centred around female characters, particularly a relationship between mother and daughter? Games have been crying out for a story like this for so long, and I really hope Open Roads is going to deliver.

I don’t believe I had any knowledge of this game before I had a look at the trailer for this hype check. I can’t believe I nearly missed it. It’s a story of a family mystery when a mother and daughter have to figure out the late grandmother’s secret. The feeling the trailer gave me was that of a comforting afternoon movie on an autumn afternoon. Plus if Annapurna picked it up, it’s probably good.

I loved Gone Home; full of atmosphere, not too long, cool mystery. This looks like it’ll be very similar to that, which is no surprise. I love the art style here and I think a game with strong female leads is great. I probably won’t play this for a while, Feb’s got a lot of games but I do very much look forward to a sleepy afternoon in a few months where I can play this.
