South Park: Snow Day | Hype Check

With THQ Nordic’s South Park: Snow Day now only a few days away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about South Park: Snow Day.

I’ve really enjoyed what we’ve seen from other recent South Park games like The Stick Of Truth, and The Fractured But Whole, but Snow Day isn’t doing it for me in the same way. Sure, it seems like the humour might still be on point, but as a gameplay experience, I’m not sure that I’m keen on what I’m going for. I’m also a little suspicious of the lack of gameplay that we’ve seen so far – it was very carefully cut and didn’t show a great deal. Given how close we now are to release, that is rarely a good sign.

Why oh why did they decide to do any sort of South Park game that isn’t in the vein of Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole? It seems crazy. People loved those games and with good reason. This one is giving me flashbacks to the terrible South Park games of the N64 era, I really give this one next to no chance of being good.

I haven’t really thought about South Park in years. I don’t have anything against them, the humour just isn’t for me, and that’s ok. If this is your cup of tea, all the more power to you. We all know there’s more than enough games out there to keep us busy.

Both Stick of Truth and Fractured But Whole were games that were more than the sum of their parts, playing in a genre space the creators of the show clearly had affection for. Snow Day looks to take that and instead become a licensed cash-in using a genre known best for games arriving DOA than becoming commercial and critical darlings. I would love to be surprised but I expect this one to be going free-to-play quicker than most.
