2022: The P2 Year That Was

2022: The P2 Year That Was

It is that time of year again, time for the P2 team to fade off into the sunset (if we actually ever see the sun over here on the east coast) and leave the hustle and bustle of Player 2 gaming coverage for another year. As I like to do before I descend into the holiday period of food, beverages and beaches I thought I would take a look back at the year that was for the team here at P2, close the chapter on what has been a strange, challenging and exciting year.

It has been a challenging year over at P2. We have seen constant growth since the pandemic which is amazing. Still, the drive to continually improve and add to what we offer has led to some slightly stressful situations and instances where I found myself running around like the proverbial headless chook. Thankfully my Editorial team made up of the legendary Stephen del Prado, the brilliant Jess Zammit and the unflappable and unstoppable Paul James have always stepped in, provided the support needed, and taken charge where required. I want to especially mention this as this year my health has been, well a bit iffy, so there have been long periods where I have been out of action. These three fine folks always stepped in and I have never worried about P2 in my absence. Without this support, P2 doesn’t exist, so if you see these cool cats in the street make sure to give them a Covid safe greeting and a hearty thanks.

This year the P2 crew put together 159 Reviews, 49 Previews and 116 Feature articles. This is to go along with daily video content and weekly Podcasts. To say we have had a productive year would be an understatement.  Speaking of Podcasts, Paul’s excellent Dev Diary reached it’s 100th episode and has become a real beacon in the Australian gaming industry as a place where developers can tell their stories to the world, so much so that it has featured some of Australia and the world’s best developers. With the work that Paul puts in, I fully expect Dev Diary to reach even greater heights in 2023.

As an outlet were once again a finalist in the Best Independent Coverage and Best Gaming Coverage at the Australian Tech Journalism Awards and once again we didn’t win. But in all seriousness, it is always an honour to be even considered in the same league as some of the giants of the local industry and I feel like we punch well above our weight to even make it into the conversation.

As for next year? Well, we are just about into our 9th trip around the sun and things don’t seem to be slowing down. As always we will strive to bring you the slightly off-beat and fun gaming coverage that you hopefully enjoy along with some new regular features and evolutions to our established formats. Make sure you hang around because we plan on having a lot of fun in the process, it is after all, all about the games.

So in signing off for the year I want to say thank you. Thank you to my entire P2 Crew for their hard work and amazing talents. Thanks to Paul, Jess and Stephen for their support, help and sanity checks, I mean it when I say P2 can’t exist without them and in many ways, their role is much more important than mine. Finally, I want to say thank you to…you. Thank you for reading, watching and listening, we do this in the hope that there are people like you out there that enjoy this sort of insanity, so thank you for validating our insanity.

I sincerely hope you all have a wonderful Christmas/Holiday break and that life treats you as well as you close out 2022. Enjoy any downtime you are lucky enough to have and we will be waiting in the New Year for you with more crazy P2 shenanigans.
