Granblue Fantasy: ReLink | Hype Check

With Granblue Fantasy: Relink now only a few weeks away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Granblue Fantasy: Relink.

I thought this game was an anime tie-in at first, and seeing Cygames didn’t give me any confidence. Luckily it looks like it’s just an anime-styled RPG. The trailer was the first time I’d actually seen anything of it (due to thinking it was a tie in), and it looks alright. Back in the PS3 and 360 era I used to play all the JRPGs I could get my hands on and it reminds me of a mix of Eternal Sonata and the Final Fantasy games. I think I’d have to try a demo or something to see if I will enjoy the story as the trailer I watched was in Japanese, and all I understood is there’s something about the god of the star. Maybe. I kept hearing the word for star and god a lot. Unless it was wolves and I misheard. Star wolves actually sound pretty cool.

I have a weird thing where I like games to kind of “appear” on my radar. I dismissed this originally as a fighting game, not that there’s anything wrong with that. I tend not to watch trailers, so I’m always surprised. I broke my own code here to check out the trailer to see what this was, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was a JRPG. I lied, a bit there. This looks incredible. As Renee said, this reminds me a lot of 360/PS3 JRPGs, which is awesome. This went from a “I don’t know what this is, really” to a “I’m going to play this one way or the other” in a heartbeat. Fans of genres are notoriously fickle; easily swayed into wanting something with little warning. I wanted to think I’m different. Turns out I’m not at all.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink wasn’t at all on my radar until really recently, thanks to some positive buzz and a public demo thats been released. Now my interest in it is rapidly growing. The visual art of the game looks amazing, even dwarfing the incredible-looking Tales Of Arise as a peer that implements a similar art style, the gameplay looks super engaging and the character designs don’t aggravate me in the way that many anime-infused games do. I’m suddenly all about this one, but I hope that it’s not just some good marketing that’s winning me over – I hope that there’s some substance to this title.
