Tekken 8 | Hype Check

Tekken 8 | Hype Check

With Bandai-Namco’s Tekken 8 now only a few weeks away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Tekken 8.

Renee O'Flynn

I don’t really play fighting games aside from Dead or Alive thanks to my brother using me as a sparring partner in Killer Instinct. He happened to know all the combos whereas my five year old self struggled to do the most basic combo, if I knew it. I know nothing about Tekken.

Jason Hawkins

I adore fighting games but I also have to be realistic and consider that I am getting older and my body just ain’t in peak fighting game form anymore. Tekken never quite had the appeal that Soul Calibre, Guilty Gear and BlazBlue had for me, but I respect its place in the industry. I’ll be watching this with interest, but I’ve never had a friend group that all rallied around Tekken like they do for any of the games mentioned above, or even Street Fighter. That’s the good thing about many games across the genre though, there’s always a bit of something for everyone.

Stephen Del Prado

I basically checked out of the Tekken franchise after 3 and never quite made it back in any meaningful way. While Tekken is easily the fighting series I’ve played the most of, it’s been over two decades since I spent any amount of time seriously playing fighting games and were I to dive back in today, the work of NetherRealm is likely where I’d gravitate to. If Bandai Namco can get a solid demo out there with some compelling single player content however, they might awaken that old fire in me again.

Jess Zammit

As is the case for a few of my fellow writers, I am not a fighting game person, and sadly, never have been. So while I respect the legacy of Tekken, and those who are excited for it, it isn’t high on my list. I hope you all get exactly the game you’re looking for, and more.

Matt Hewson

I like fighting games, they are a part of my gaming history, playing in arcades and fish-n-chip stores against mates. So despite not being able to dedicate the time to become good at fighters, I still enjoy them. That said, Mortal Kombat has spoiled me so whenever I look at a fighting game I expect a good single-player component otherwise I am going to bounce off pretty quickly. In the case of Tekken, they have always struggled with that sort of thing so I am not holding massive hope that it will nail that area. I want it to be though because I do love the gameplay.

Paul James

At this point, it is fairly well documented through the years of chronicled pieces at Player 2 that I’m not a fighting game aficionado, so with that said, I’m not feeling any kind of hype for Tekken 8. Everything that is presented in various showcases looks good, for what it is, and I’m certain that the FGC will have their hunger satiated once the game launches later in January, however, for this humble RPG/Platformer fan, I’m not at all buying what they’re selling. Good luck to all those who are keen, I’m sure that you will have a blast, and I sincerely hope that is the case.
