Banishers: Ghosts Of New Eden | Hype Check
With Banishers: Ghosts Of New Eden now only a few weeks away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Banishers: Ghosts Of New Eden.

An interesting fantasy setting that struck me as quite amazing looking from the trailer. With a name that is a bit of a mouthful fantasy rpg decision-making consequences will be an awesome touch to the Dontnod developer’s usual formula.

I’ve not given DontNod many chances over the years. The first Life Is Strange bothered me largely due to the number of times “Hella” was uttered, and I’ve not given the team a chance since. I know that’s wrong because I’ve seen some good stuff come out since that absolutely appeals to me, but it’s been a time and place thing. Banishers: Ghosts Of New Eden looks very much like a Paul game, and so I’m hoping that it doesn’t get buried by the landslide of February games so that I can reingratiate myself with a DontNod title

The last time Dontnod dipped into RPG territory we got the almost-good Vampyr. I quite enjoyed my time with that game but it had some clear issues and what appeared to be a limited budget that shone through in the final product. I hope that Dontnod can take Banishers to the next level because I love the thinking behind all of their games, I just hope their ambitions are not to much for their abilities (or more accurately budget)

I’m in two minds about this because on paper it sounds like my thing. I love mysteries, especially with supernatural elements. I also enjoy action RPGs. Narrative rich? Sign me up. However, I’m unsure if the love part of it will appeal to me. It’s hard to say. Sometimes I enjoy it if it’s not in your face, but sometimes it can be too much. I think it’ll depend on how it’ll play. This one will be one to check out sometime in the future. I hope they release a demo.

Dontnod make such interesting games. Not necessarily great games, but interesting ones. An ARPG with consequences sounds super cool, and if they manage the love story part right this will be extremely compelling. I’m a sucker for forbidden romances and I adore ARPGs. This has all the hallmarks of something really special, and I think Dontnod could actually pull it off with a lot of care and attention to the product. I worry that this will become a bit of a ‘cult hit’ because there are just so many good games in February, but I’ll be watching this one with curiosity.

I love DontNod. So much. Life is Strange and Life is Strange: True Colours are some of my favourite games of all time, and that has earned them a lot of goodwill with me. And Tell Me Why? Also a masterpiece. They’ve proven time and time again that they can tell a good story, and innovative mechanics will often go hand in hand with the way they choose to do it – so all the ingredients for a wonderful game are here. I’m always excited for their next title, and this time is no different. When DontNod makes a new game, I will play it – end of story.
