Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | Hype Check
With Final Fantasy VII Rebirth now only a few weeks away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Confession time. I have never played FFVII. And I have no intention of starting now.

Final Fantasy 7 probably wasn’t the FF game of its era that would most benefit from being remade (some of the ambitions in 8 were beyond its hardware, and there are some broken systems in there that could be fixed), but it was definitely the one that had been most clamoured after. The eventual 2020 release of the first part did an amazing job of managing to satisfy fans coming from all kinds of perspectives.
Perhaps more impressively, this next part not only looks incredible, but appears to have come from a smooth development cycle. Square-Enix(!) has managed to develop something in an efficient manner! That alone is probably worthy of celebration.

I kind of missed the entire FF7 hype train (mainly because I was PC gaming when the original saw release in the 90s, and its PC), and so I’ve not played the first part of this ambitious project. Like others, I’ve felt it’s hard to get into them in recent years because of the time commitment, and honestly? I feel this is gonna suffer the same way.
Maybe in a (fair) few years when I’ve carved out time to try and beat the first part, then I could give this a shot.

When I reviewed FFVII Remake, I went in trepidatious that there was no way Square Enix could pull off the entire thing. The reveal of it being a Part One and that SE weren’t in fact planning to recreate the second and third discs was something of a relief. What they WERE planning on doing was still a lingering question though. A brief trip to Bandai Namco offices late last year gave me some hands-on with Rebirth which has gone even further in building on the gameplay advances as well as some interesting reworking of the original story, so I’m quite keen to dig into this one and see just how far this series spin’s out from the revered classic.

I’m not a Final Fantasy person – this has been well-chronicled on Player 2. I want to be! I promise! I just didn’t grow up with them, and have just never really had the time to sink into the series in recent years. It’s a huge commitment. I’m excited for those who are excited about this game (and there are a lot of you!) but I can’t get excited about this until I’ve played about 25 other games in the series to get all the context. One day I’ll revisit this Hype Check post and eat my words, I’m sure.

Look Final Fantasy VII Remake for me is a solid game that just never set my pants on fire. I played a good 20 hours of it, but I just couldn’t drag me back to finish it once I got distracted by other games. I suspect my feelings towards Rebirth will be much the same. Though I am happy to be proven wrong.

I own 4 copies of FFVII across various systems. I had every intent to play it and I just never got around to it. The hype was too big and overpowering I thought my own wants could never come close to the sheer nostalgia bombs I constantly got barraged with from other people. The console re-release came out and I picked it up and forgot to play it again. It looks good, people seem to like it and it did the absolute rare thing of seemingly satisfying the ungodly weight of expectation. I’m glad this exists, but I have no interest in it until I actually get around to playing it. Unfortunately, gaming backlogs are horrifying things that will never be stopped. One day, FFVII I’ll get to you. Today’s just not that day.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is my most anticipated game of 2024 so naturally I’m pretty damn hyped now that we’re a matter of weeks away, overdrive is where the excitement levels are beginning to trend towards. With the way remake ended, Square-Enix has implored players to expect the unexpected with anything you knew from the original Final Fantasy VII now being on the chopping block for change. I’m excited to see what they do, and if nothing else, I’m just keen to dive into those combat systems again which were such a blast.
