Skull And Bones | Hype Check

Skull And Bones | Hype Check

With Skull And Bones now only a few weeks away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Skull And Bones.

Jason Hawkins

I think for me this will be a bit of a ‘wait and see’. I’m not super fond of the direction Ubisoft games went in, and it caused me to fall off most things they touched. I liked Sea of Thieves but found it all a bit silly. I love pirate stuff and maybe we’ll get a banger soundtrack of shanties a la Black Flag, but I’m just not sure. Hopefully it’ll be good instantly rather than the somewhat tradition of becoming a fan favourite in year 2 or 3.

I’m in a weird sort of place with Skull and Bones. I want it to succeed if only because a lot of people have been waiting a long time for it. I would like to see more studios delay games if they aren’t finished rather than pushing through and hoping it’ll be fine. I played a little bit of Sea of Thieves when it first came out and while it was fun with friends, I found the lack of story a problem. If I’m completely honest, the idea of naval battles just isn’t my sort of thing anyway but I think I’ll still keep an eye on it.

At this point, I’ve lost track of what Skull & Bones is claiming to be. Pirates, obviously, and apparently possibly something akin to Black Flag in some ways? Unless it’s something incredible, it’s pretty unlikely that it’s going to pull me in. If Sea of Thieves couldn’t lure me in with Monkey Island content, I don’t think Skull & Bones is going to manage to do it without it.

Matt Hewson

I have never seen a game that people are so ready to bag out before even playing. I am not talking about my fellow writers, just the gaming community in general. It seems people are going out of their way to slag this game even though they haven’t played it yet. People are weird. I get that a naval combat game is probably not for everyone, but from what I played there is certainly promise there for those that are inclined towards a bit of high seas fun. I had a good time in the 6 hour beta, but my main concern is how it will hold up over the length of a game. I can see it getting repetitive if there isn’t more variety in the missions as the game goes on.

Paul James

I know Matt has spoken pretty highly of Skull & Bones in his preview, but this game is going to need to be something pretty special to win me over at this point. It has missed it’s golden opportunity by close to a decade at this point, and while I’m longing for another Assassin’s Creed on the high seas, this isn’t what I’m looking for. Hopefully it can surprise us all and be a gem, but I’m not confident at this point.
