Contra: Operation Galuga | Hype Check

With Konami’s Contra: Operation Galuga now only a few weeks away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Contra: Operation Galuga.

Matt Hewson

Well, I do love an old-school platformer and Contra is as old-school as it gets. Tough as nails and designed to suck down those 20c pieces, the originals games were always something I would have a crack at in the arcades, usually while I was waiting for the Mortal Kombat or NBA Jam machine to free up, so I do have a history with the franchise. That said, that old arcade flavour is something that will certainly frustrate those who didn’t experience it in the day so unless concessions are made, this could really be a tough sell for those who weren’t born in the 80s. Not really sure where I sit on this, other than to say I will be watching closely.

There hasn’t been nearly enough old-school style side scrolling shooters, and this looks like a return to form for Contra. It’s been a billion years since I’ve played one of these, but it’s got Probotector as a character and that’s rad as heck. WayForward are developing this too, and they sure as hell know side scrollers. Colour me cautiously optimistic.

Somehow, despite 3.5 decades of time on this mortal coil, I have somehow not played a Contra game… I think. I won’t lie though, Rob’s excitement for this one intrigues me, and to then learn that Wayforward are associated with the development of the game, and now I feel like this might be the Contra game to introduce me to the IP.

Konami isn’t flying and has been making some dubious choices with some of the developers that they’ve chosen to align with for some of their other upcoming Silent Hill and Metal Gear games, but the choice for Contra seems to be a good one, and I also want to do my bit to positively reinforce their decision making.

I included this in my stuff I’m looking forward to list based on the rep of Wayforward, based on the Contra game they did back on the DS some time ago.

Having had a quick play of the demo which dropped recently (on the PS5), I found it pretty much to be what I expected from opening impressions – an old school challenge, with a few quality of life things to make it approachable for those who aren’t necessarily masters of the OG series.

As for the full release, I’ll certainly be grabbing the game, though maybe not at day one.
