Princess Peach: Showtime | Hype Check

With Nintendo’s Princess Peach: Showtime now only days away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Princess Peach: Showtime.

It’s about time we got a mainline Super Mario Bros game that features Peach with transformations. Mario has been changing up his powers and clothes for years so why did it take Nintendo so long to realise that it’s what Peach needed as well? I think having it set in a theatre is a great direction as Nintendo is great at incorporating interesting mechanics related to their set pieces. I’m hoping it’s good.

I started out a bit dubious of Princess Peach Showtime simply due to the fact that it feels like Peach has been relegated to the B or C-tier games previously, but just like every other Nintendo first party title this generation, it looks like the Switch treatment is being kind to this game. I’m loving the interchangeable costumes and what that will mean for gameplay, and while the story threads will likely be throwaway, there’s enough here to leave me sufficiently intrigued.

This looks interesting, and it’s been a long time since Peach had her own game. I think the aesthetic of the theatre is a very fun one, but it looked a bit easy for me. Not that I like only difficult games, but this doesn’t quite hit the mark for me. I think it’ll be a bit of a cult classic. Art style is cool though.

While this one isn’t going to set my world on fire, it looks like it could be a great one to grab for younger players who have wrapped up Yoshi’s Crafted World and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Nintendo don’t really get enough credit sometimes for how well they cater to underserved demographics and as a parent myself, I’d be more than happy to grab this one for my kids to try.

Hell freakin’ yes. I don’t care if this game is for kids, I already know I’m going to have the best time with it, mostly because just finally having Peach as the star is something I’ve been waiting for for a long time. Plus, this looks almost like a weird Mario-slash-Kirby mechanical platforming hybrid, and I’m really intrigued to see how it lands. Honestly, this is probably my most anticipated game for the year, and I just know it’s going to bring me pure, unadulterated joy.
