Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door | Hype Check
With Nintendo’s Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door now only a few days away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

This is a GOAT contender. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is one of the all-time JRPGs and now it’s getting a proper remake. I’m super excited to go back to a world that I absolutely adore, with characters who I love equally so. The story of The Thousand Year Door is a constantly engaging and amusing one, the mechanics are top tier, and I can’t wait to go back to it.

I never got to play the original, and with the Gamecube game being between $150-200, this feels like a reasonable chance at being able to finally play a game that people believe should be part of every gamecube collection. I’m just hoping it’s not a ridiculous price and that it will be affordable, which with Nintendo, it usually is.

I only ever played the original briefly and remember not liking it after Super Mario RPG, but that was more than likely a bad take. I am interested, but frankly, I am not a fan of using my Switch at the moment and this is probably not enough to get me to blow the dust off it. Maybe if it comes to the inevitable Switch 2.

My sons’ passion for Mario far outstrips my own at this point in time, greedily hoovering up every title in my Switch collection and begging for more. A Mario-themed JRPG might be a nice way to introduce them to what can be a very creaky genre in some instances as well as go back and revisit a section of the Mario franchise that is quite the blindspot for myself, so I can see this one making its way on to my shelves sooner rather than later.

I had the original on GameCube (I still do, and apparently am sitting on a goldmine?), and it was one of those games I played half of but never finished – and I can’t remember why, because I also remember really enjoying what I played. I will absolutely be checking it out again with the re-release on Switch, and I presume making it all the way through this time. Nintendo have been doing a stellar job of their remakes at the moment, and I can only presume that this one is going to be no different!
