Tales Of Kenzera: Zau | Hype Check
With Surgent Studios’ Tales Of Kenzera: Zau now only a few weeks away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Tales Of Kenzera: Zau.

I played this during Steam’s Next Fest and found I really loved the feel of it. I knew I wanted to play it on console though, as I usually play these sorts of games on my xbox. It reminded me of the great metroidvania games with an interesting story to tie the gameplay together. The idea of using the two masks to swap between the melee and range is an interesting concept that could have some great potential.

The EA Originals line-up rarely misses, at least in terms of its appeal. I love the initiative, and I love the games catalogue that they’ve been curating. Tales Of Kenzera: Zau, seems primed to sit nicely alongside the high-quality line-up that exists. I’m loving what I’ve seen of gameplay, while Abubakar Salim’s heartfelt TGA speech still echoes in my mind. As a Sony Pony, I’m also thrilled about the game coming to PS+ Extra at launch too. Stars are aligning nicely for this one!

I’ve spent many years in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) learning how to deal with emotions. Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker knocked me flat and was one of the first times I felt anything from a game. This ticks all the boxes for me; it’s a heartfelt story about overcoming grief, it’s a metroidvania, and it’s based strongly in folklore. I want to see more tales from folklore from all over the world, and Bantu isn’t something I’m familiar with at all. Buckle me in, I want to be suckerpunched in the feels and love it the whole time.

After enjoying the hell out of what I played of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, I feel more like this is going to be my sort of game. It looks smooth as hell, was clearly made with a whole heap of heart, and promises to tell a new kind of story, which is always welcome in my books. Plus, launching on PS+ Extra! How exciting!
